Body Conditioning Score in Sheep Related to Milk Quality and Lamb Size

Sheep expert Dr. Nerys Wright stated that the body condition score (BCS) of sheep is decisive in terms of productivity. Speaking at AgriSearch's Flock Focus 2026 event in Tyrone County, Northern Ireland, Wright said that the BCS reflects the fat cover between the skin and the spine, as well as the transverse protrusions.

The score is usually measured on a scale from 1 to 5; 1 indicates extreme weakness, and 5 indicates obesity. While extreme cases can be assessed visually, in other cases the sheep must remain still on all four legs, and the same body area must be manually examined each time.
