The Chilean Ministry of Agriculture presented the sectoral protocol for disaster risks in the agricultural and forestry sector of forest fires at a spring-summer seasonal agroclimatic outlook meeting in Santiago on October 28. The protocol regulates pre-crisis preparation, emergency response and recovery in the forestry and agriculture sector through institutional coordination, timely access to information, and efficient use of existing public vehicles. Risk management is handled in three phases: preventive preparation and monitoring, emergency response and recovery, and reactivation of production.

In the prevention phase, temperature, precipitation, humidity, wind, the condition of vegetation and the presence of flammable material will be monitored together. In addition, a weekly review of forecasts, warnings, areas at risk, and current capabilities will be conducted. Following a fire, the Ministry will coordinate the identification of affected areas, damage detection, evaluation of possible agricultural emergency declaration and prioritization of early aid.

According to the emergency response schedule, the communes and production systems exposed in the first 24 hours will be identified and the authorities will be presented with the first report. Within 48-72 hours, the effects and the preliminary assessment of immediate needs will be combined; within the first week, reports will be updated, aids monitored, and preliminary economic forecasts for damage-losses will be prepared. In the next phase, according to the damage determined by the Silvo-agricultural Impact Form (FAS), support for the recovery of products, animals, irrigation infrastructure, soils and other production elements will be prioritized. MINAGRI will also publish threat monitoring, early warning, and prevention information on its corporate channels and agroclimatic platforms.
