E. coli cases linked to Bengtson's Pumpkin Farm in Homer Glen, Illinois have been reported, producing five confirmed Shiga toxin-producing cases, with ages ranging from 4 to 38; hospitalisation occurred in four of the cases. The farm's zoo was closed on 23 October, while other sections, such as trips, food stands, and the corn maze, remained open. It was reported that more than 200 visitors completed the symptom survey conducted by the district.
The San Luis Obispo County Department of Public Health confirmed five Shiga toxin-producing E. coli cases linked to visitors to Brookshire Farms in California, and announced the possible exposure period as 16–26 October. The farm was closed while the source of the infections was being investigated. Between 16 and 26 October, people who visited the farm's pumpkin field or corn maze and experienced symptoms such as abdominal cramps or bloody diarrhoea were advised to contact a healthcare provider. These symptoms can usually appear 3–10 days after the visit; children under 10 years of age are at the highest risk for complications.
Dallas County is examining up to seven possible cases in children, whether linked to the zoo at the Texas State Fair. Some children were reported to have received intensive care treatment, while the county administration has not yet used the term 'outbreak' to describe the incident. The opinion piece argued that there is no federal law governing disease risk in areas where animals and the public come into contact, and that most states rely on voluntary guidance.
The author of the article proposed stricter measures, stating that warning signs and guidelines alone are insufficient. These recommendations include ensuring that children under five do not come into direct contact with high-risk animals such as calves, lambs and kids; the presence of soap and running water at the exit of animal contact areas; and the closure of areas that rely solely on hand sanitiser. On the grounds that animals may intermittently disperse pathogens, it was also suggested that pre-arrival negative tests have limited significance.
