Egypt diversifies suppliers of strategic grain and soybean imports

Egypt is seeking to diversify suppliers of strategic agricultural imports in response to the risks that wars and international crises pose to global trade. Mohammed al-Mansi, head of Egypt's Central Administration of Agricultural Quarantine, said the country had opened multiple import origins to meet its staple-product needs.

The new sources include Russia, Ukraine, France, Canada, the United States, Australia and India. Wheat, maize and soybeans are the focus of the diversification. Al-Mansi said political and military crises could disrupt shipments and increase transport costs. The diversified supply structure is intended to allow Egypt to choose among sources based on prices, shipping costs and technical requirements.
