El Niño and Climate Change Bring Indian Farmers' Adaptation Options to the Agenda

In an episode of the Agrispective Podcast, Swades Foundation Senior Manager Mangesh Wange discussed El Niño-induced weather disruptions and the effects of climate change on Indian agriculture. Farmers in rural Maharashtra, in particular, have encountered rainfall deficits, drought-like conditions, water shortages, lack of feed, and crop losses.

Wange said that large-scale irrigation projects, along with decentralised solutions such as field ponds, could improve water safety and the resilience of farms. The episode also evaluated integrated livelihood models that combine crop diversification, gardening, medicinal plants, and intercropping, as well as dairy farming, goat breeding, poultry farming, and fishing. According to Wange, multiple sources of income and climate-resilient practices can help farmers reduce risks and adapt to disordered monsoons.
