In Mexico, Sader Will Focus on Strengthening the Agave-Tekila Value Chain

The Mexican Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) will work to strengthen the value chain from agave cultivation to tequila production and marketing. Sader President Columba López Gutiérrez visited a tequila production plant in Jalisco, Mexico this week to closely examine the production and distillation process. López Gutiérrez announced that the chain would focus specifically on plant health and food safety.

The ministry's plans include the development of an agroecological system in agave cultivation, the improvement and recovery of land, joint work with biofactories, and the fight against pests. Sader also aims to strengthen links between agriculture, research, and industry; to develop common solutions between producers, researchers, and organisations that process the product. These initiatives are planned to be monitored through work desks, forums and training sessions. López Gutiérrez also highlighted the contribution of science, technology and expertise to product quality during his visit to the laboratory of the Tequila Regulatory Council.

The federal government, Jalisco administration and the Tequila Regulatory Council held a working meeting for an action plan for the agave-tequila chain, according to the National Chamber of Tequila Industries. The meeting addressed the number of agave producers, the registration and updating of plantations, strategic planning, plant health and protection of producers. Additionally, the Agave Responsible Social certificate, geographic data viewer, other uses of the agave, product rehni, product design transformation, new markets and plant health campaigns were evaluated. The improvement of land, the development of biofertilisers, and the strengthening of the tequila trade, particularly in Asian markets, were also discussed.
