Montenegro Closes Food Safety Chapter in EU Negotiations

Montenegro has closed the 12th chapter of EU negotiations, which includes food safety, official controls, animal and plant health, and the management of animal by-products. Agriculture Minister Vladimir Joković stated that a significant portion of the obligations in this process fall under the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture and its affiliated institutions.

Under this chapter, relevant basic laws were adopted and the official control system was developed. Progress has been made in improving raw milk quality and bringing food production and processing facilities in line with European requirements. Special attention was given to traditional production involving small-scale producers to preserve the characteristics of local agriculture while aligning with European standards.

Closing this chapter does not mean that reforms have been completed. Key priorities for Montenegro include the establishment of border control points and facilities for the management of animal by-products, the development of laboratory capacity, and the strengthening of expert personnel. The ministry has stated that work will continue towards full implementation of European standards until EU membership is achieved.
