Organization for Profitable Agriculture, Irrigation and Climate-Approached Production

High yields in modern agriculture do not necessarily mean that the producer will make a profit. Jelena Nestorov Bizonj, President of the Vojvodina Association of Cooperatives, said that the organisation of producers would increase market power, reduce production costs, add value to outputs, increase profitability, and protect the environment using natural resources.

One example of this approach was the irrigation work of the Polet agricultural cooperative in Aleksandrovo. Over the years, the cooperative has developed its irrigation systems, bringing about 400 hectares into intensive irrigation during this production season. Polet Director Bojan Stepanović explained that yields in 240 hectares of maize ranged from 9.5 to 13.5 tons per hectare, while in watered seed wheat, 11 tons per hectare were achieved. Stepanović stated that the yield of watered wheat doubled compared to unwatered areas.

Experts say that climate change requires a reassessment of growing technologies and product selection in fruit production. Fruiting expert Zoran Keserović said that fruit varieties should be selected according to agroecological conditions and that there is a quality pear deficit in the European market. In vegetable production, it is recommended to take into account the biology of crops, reduce soil tillage, provide regular care, protect against diseases and pests, and use biological preparations and predators. Keserović stated that biostimulants and bioregulators help plants cope with stress.
