Salmonella detected in Brazil-based frozen chicken meat in Kosovo

Salmonella Minnesota bacteria were detected in samples of frozen chicken meat imported from Brazil in Kosovo, which was marketed among Apetit SHPK products. The Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV) temporarily halted the sale and circulation of the identified products following laboratory results, formally placed the products under official control, and ordered their withdrawal from points of sale. The detection was made during extraordinary import meat checks conducted under the direction of the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development, Armend Muja.

The decision covers products with SIF 3887 approval and lot number R-14427 in Brazilian Coopavel products. For Superfrango products, the SIF 3404 approval and lot number R20598 are specified. According to the AUV, Salmonella Minnesota is a pathogenic serotype of Salmonella enterica bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal infections in humans.

AUV has advised consumers who purchased products with the affected lot numbers to refrain from consuming them and to return them to the points of purchase. The agency has stated that the risk is not limited to consumption of only contaminated meat; during preparation, bacteria could be transferred to other foods via hands, containers, or kitchen surfaces.

The controls are not limited to the samples in which the bacterium was detected. The AUV is conducting traceability studies to determine the total volume imported, the distribution locations, the amounts reaching consumers and remaining on the market. The reviews assess the movement of products from entry into Kosovo to points of sale, labels, production and expiry dates, veterinary certificates, storage conditions, and additional laboratory analyses. Following the risk assessment, the AUV will determine the final handling of the products; disposal may be applied if deemed necessary.
