A merchant based in Ho Chi Minh City said domestic market supply in Vietnam was limited. According to traders, the fall-winter harvest will not begin until the end of November, and production of this harvest will only be half of the summer-spring harvest. Also, the phenomenon of El Niño is expected to affect rice production starting next year. One trader said prices could rise further if the Philippines returns to purchases from Vietnam starting next month.
India's 5% broken parboiled rice was priced at $387-392 and the 5% broken white rice at $389-394. As new season paddy inflows begin to rise in the northern states, supply is expected to rise in the central and southern states starting next month. Thailand's 5% broken rice did not change at $480; some African markets preferred cheaper Indian rice.
