For good fermentation, it is ideal to have a sugar content of over -than 3% during the cutting period. However, it was reported that achieving this target in mid-September and later, particularly in silage cut in October, would be very difficult. Sugars such as glucose are broken down by bacteria, producing lactic acid, which plays a key role in fermentation.
Sugar Level Matters for Fermentation in Late Cut Silage
After two months of drought, the delay of fertilizer application also led to the delay of the silage harvest. A significant portion of the silage on the farms was reaped after mid-September; the quality of this silage was relatively low due to the rapid growth of grass after drought and the decrease in daylight during harvest.
