Spain Allows First Time to Pull Olive Oil From the Market

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has published a marketing standard that allows a portion of olive oil to be withdrawn from the market in order to regulate supply and stabilise market functioning during the 2026/27 campaign. The ministry will determine the percentage of the product to be withdrawn before 15 November, marking the first time this mechanism is being implemented. The product may be withdrawn from the market until the end of the campaign.

For the mechanism to be activated, the total of initial stocks and estimated production must reach at least 120% of the average calculated for the same total over the previous six campaigns. Estimated production for the 2026/27 campaign is 1,602,596 tonnes. This amount is 23% above the previous campaign and is considered the fourth highest volume in Spain's historical records.

The initial stock level for the campaign reached 357,040 tonnes, which is 23.3% above the previous campaign. According to the regulation, the operator will be able to select the category of the product to be withdrawn, and the rate will be applied based on the monthly cumulative total of olive oil production. The product may be stored until the next campaign or directed to non-food use. The mechanism will be exceptional and conjunctural.

The producer from Jaén, Francisco Elvira, said that natural extra virgin olive oil, whose producer price did not reach three euros, does not cover production costs. Elvira stated that the most likely option in stock management is to withdraw lampante oil from the market and sell it in the following season. The exact volume, product categories and implementation periods for the withdrawal have not yet been announced.
